Vitrectomy Procedures Can Help Restore Better Vision

January 24, 2023

Human beings’ eyes come in many colors, but whatever their hues, they all have one thing in common: They are how we’re able to see the world around us. That’s all the more reason why eye health should not be taken for granted.

The office of South Florida Eye Health is skilled at diagnosing and treating a wide range of eye conditions. Our goal is to attain and maintain each of our patient’s best possible vision.

Two of the most important parts of the eye are the retina (a layer of cells that use light to send visual information to the brain) and the vitreous (the clear jelly-like substance that fills the inside of each eyeball). If problems arise with the retina or the vitreous, a procedure called a vitrectomy may be needed.

These problems can be treated with a vitrectomy.

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal detachment
  • Vitreous hemorrhage
  • Infection inside your eye
  • Severe eye injury
  • A hole in the central part of your retina (macula)
  • A wrinkle in the central part of your retina
  • Certain problems after cataract surgery

All of these medical conditions can cause vision loss and, if not treated, some can even lead to blindness.

To perform a vitrectomy, an ophthalmologist employs petite instruments to perforate the eyeball and suction out the vitreous. He (or she) then executes other needed retinal repairs. In some cases, a vitrectomy can restore lost vision.

A vitrectomy is usually performed on an outpatient basis—meaning that a patient can go home the same day. Pain meds will help ease the discomfort that the procedure may cause. Some patients may have to wear an eye patch for a day or two. Antibiotics might also be prescribed to help prevent infection.

The office of South Florida Eye Health is committed to maintaining optimal eye health. We’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate eye care for you and your family.
