High Risk Glaucoma Clinic

The High Risk Glaucoma Clinic aims to identify people at high risk of disability and blindness due to glaucoma and avoid this from happening.

Eligibility for this clinic is based on patients meeting any one of the following criteria:

  • Visual disability Has glaucoma in both eyes and is legally blind in one or both eyes due to glaucoma
  • Intraocular pressure Intraocular pressure of 30 or more despite using treatment.
  • Visual field loss Mean deviation score of -12 decibels or less in either eye. Any point sensitivity of 15 decibels or less in the central 5 degrees of visual field.
  • Medication problems Unacceptable side effects from eye drops, such as redness, burning or blurry vision. Long term use of oral medication to treat glaucoma.
  • Surgical need Needs surgery for glaucoma. Previously had surgery for glaucoma and this is no longer working.

Some of these criteria can be corrected allowing the patient to graduate from and leave this clinic. However, due to the nature of the disease some patients will remain eligible for the high risk glaucoma clinic for life.
